In the UK, the law stipulates that children up to 12 years old or up to a height of 135 cm must be secured in child restraint systems while in a car – in other words, the use of a child car seat is mandatory. But what legal requirements must seat models meet, and how can you tell whether your car seat is certified?

Safety: the most important factor in car seats

The R129 (also known as i-Size) regulation is the latest standard for child car seats and provides  significantly higher safety standards for protecting young passengers compared to the older ECE R44 standard. Car seats approved under ECE R 44 (with the exception of amendment series 03 and 04) may no longer be sold in the EU as of September 2024. In the UK parents are encouraged to choose R129 seats for their enhanced safety features, side-impact protection in particular is now given more attention: only seats that pass this test receive certification. Furthermore, this classification is now based on height rather than weight, which makes selection and fitting much easier in everyday care situations.

When using a R129 approved car seat, children must be rear-facing seat until they are 15 months old regardless of their size. Children under the age of 15 months may not be transported in them in a forward-facing position. The marie integral. features a built-in safety system that only allows forward-facing use from a height of 76 cm. However, larger children can also travel rear-facing in the marie integral. It is recommended that children travel rear-facing for as long as possible – ideally up to the age of four or a height of 105 cm.

What is i-Size?

The term “i-Size” refers to the latest approval standard for child car seats. Approval standards regulate which safety requirements and technical specifications child seats must meet in order to be approved for the European market. The i-Size standard is part of the current test regulation ECE R 129, officially titled the “EU Safety Regulation for Child Restraint Systems UN/ECE Regulation 129.”
