A strong team – the twins Miron and Maxim

“Brothers and sisters are like Indians: Either they are on the warpath or they smoke the peace pipe”. The poet Kurt Tucholsky said this, long before the worldwide Sibling Day (on April 10th) was introduced in 1997. Siblings of disabled children play a special role. One might think they are considered a fifth wheel and receive less attention, but is that true?

“I’m much faster on my bike than you are,” Maxim shouts to his twin brother Miron, and indeed the four-year-old pedals hard on the yellow and black momo. tricycle and is literally flying through the bend. Thier mother Alena is standing in the background, she fights back the tears. “I am thrilled when I see the two of them. You no longer see any disadvantage,” she says.  Her eyes now full of joy. In everyday life she tries hard to treat her sons equally.”Of course, I can be afraid that Miron will get a raw deal, but he already knows very well that his brother is not as good as he is at many things and needs more help”.

Maxim has an amazing career wish

Maxim was born with spastic cerebral palsy and needs help with walking, sitting and many other movements. His twin brother Miron, on the other hand, spends his free time playing football, unfortunately not with Borussia Dortmund, a German soccer club that the boys are both big fans of. The twins proudly wear their yellow and black jerseys – the team colours − and have lots of team merchandise at home, from cuddly toys to lollipops that colour their tongues.

Maxim is ringing the bell on his momo tricycle. imagining it is the sound of the crowd in the stadium during a football game in Dortmund. That’s where he wants to be “I’m going to be the best striker and stand on the pitch” he says. Alena knows this has been his dream from an early age. Impossible with his disability?

Great support from his twin brother

Maxim is a fighter and he has a great support in everyday life – his brother. Miron helps him all of the time. For example when Maxim wants to get on the sofa, Miron just pushes him up. “Of course the argue at times“ says Alena, „but they soon make up and are friends again arm in arm”. Only in the “bicycle race” during the test and trial day at Schuchmann are they competitors. But just for fun.

What is Sibling Day?

On April 10, 2020, siblings around the world celebrate Siblings Day. The day was brought to life in 1997 by Claudia Evart in memory of her siblings. She lost her older sister Lisette and brother Alan in various car accidents. Evart chose the birthday of her sister Lisette, April 10th, as the date. Sibling Day is a supplement to Mothers and Fathers Day. It is meant to honor the relationship between siblings.
